Russian Black Terriers

History of Yarrawon Kennels

Since opening their boarding kennels in 1977, Rod and Margaret Maruff have been successfully breeding and training award winning dogs. The Yarrawon Kennels prefix began with Boxers, but since those early years this successful couple have bred Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Weimaraners, Saint Bernards, Boston Terriers and now – Russian Black Terriers.

Russian Black Terriers

First introduced into Australia in 2001, their award winning Yarrawon Russian Black Terriers are internationally renowned for their breeding excellence. Initially bred in Russia at the end of World War II as a service guard dog, they have worked as mine detector dogs and farm dogs, protected livestock and have even located wounded soldiers.

  • Highly sought after as show dogs, obedience trial dogs or security dogs, Russian Black Terriers are still rare in Australia.
  • An alert dog, easily adaptable to new situations
  • Will stand their ground, but are not dog aggressive and will not provoke a fight
  • Reserved towards strangers, so socialising as puppies is essential
  • Affectionate and gentle and do well in a family environment
  • Do not like confinement in a kennel all day and require moderate, daily exercise
  • Requires a weekly brush and clipping 3-4 times a year
  • Black coat with a few white/grey hairs evident
  • Suitable for experienced dog owners who are prepared to fully train their Russian Black Terrier

Yarrawon Russian Black Terriers

Rod and Margaret have done their utmost to breed Champion Russian Black Terriers that meet the stringent Russian Show Standards.

Through careful selection and breeding, Rod and Margaret have retained the easy temperament of the Yarrawon Russian Black Terriers – which makes them perfect companions or family dogs.

All of Yarrawon Kennels puppies are socialised and their personalities tested whilst at the kennels. This ensures that each puppy is placed with the perfect owner, in the best environment.
